Military life insurance has gotten complicated with all the different acronyms and coverage options flying around. As someone who’s spent years making sure my own family is protected and helping fellow service members understand their options, I learned everything there is to know about SGLI, FSGLI, and the coverage decisions that matter. Today, I will share it all with you.
SGLI costs remain remarkably affordable compared to private market alternatives. Monthly premiums for maximum coverage represent excellent value, particularly for those with health conditions that might increase private insurance costs or result in coverage denials. The default four hundred thousand dollar coverage may be insufficient for families with significant financial obligations or long-term income replacement needs though.

Coverage Considerations
Probably should have led with this section, honestly. Calculating appropriate coverage involves assessing income replacement needs, debt obligations, childcare costs, and education funding goals. A thorough analysis often reveals that maximum SGLI coverage should be supplemented with additional private insurance for complete protection.
Family Servicemembers Group Life Insurance extends coverage to spouses and children at subsidized rates. That’s what makes the FSGLI program endearing to us military families — while coverage limits are lower than SGLI, this option provides affordable protection that would cost significantly more through private insurers.
Veterans Group Life Insurance allows coverage conversion upon separation without medical underwriting. Planning for this transition ensures continued protection during vulnerable periods when employment and benefits may be uncertain. I’ve watched too many folks let this window slip by.
Estate Planning Basics
Beneficiary designations on SGLI and other accounts override will provisions. Reviewing and updating beneficiaries after major life events prevents unintended distributions that can create hardship for intended recipients. I check mine every PCS and after every major life change.
Wills establish guardianship preferences for minor children and direct asset distribution. Military legal assistance offices provide free will preparation services that every service member with dependents should utilize regardless of asset levels. Seriously, there’s no excuse not to have this done.
Powers of attorney become essential during deployments when spouses need authority to handle financial and legal matters. Ensuring appropriate documents are in place before departure prevents complications during already stressful separations.
