TSP contribution strategies have gotten complicated with all the competing advice flying around the barracks and break rooms. As someone who’s spent years studying these retirement accounts, I learned everything there is to know about the Traditional vs Roth TSP decision. Today, I will share it all with you.
Choosing between Traditional and Roth TSP contributions confuses many service members, and honestly, the confusion is understandable. For most junior enlisted and officers, Roth contributions provide significant long-term advantages – but the reasons why aren’t always obvious at first glance.
Traditional TSP contributions reduce your taxable income now but require paying taxes on withdrawals in retirement. Roth contributions are taxed now but grow and withdraw completely tax-free. That’s what makes this decision so important – we’re talking about potentially tens of thousands of dollars in tax savings over a military career.
The Tax Bracket Argument
Probably should have led with this section, honestly, because the math here is compelling. Junior service members typically sit in the 12% or 22% tax brackets. With anticipated promotions and potential post-military careers, your retirement income will likely be higher than current income, pushing you into higher brackets.
Paying 12% tax now on Roth contributions beats paying 22% or more on Traditional withdrawals later. The math becomes even more favorable considering decades of tax-free growth. I’ve run these numbers countless times, and for most young service members, Roth wins by a significant margin.
When Traditional Makes Sense
Senior NCOs and officers in the 24% bracket or higher might benefit from Traditional contributions that reduce current taxes. Those planning to retire with lower income than current earnings also favor Traditional. It’s not a one-size-fits-all answer.
Consider splitting contributions between Traditional and Roth for tax diversification in retirement, giving you flexibility to manage tax liability depending on what tax rates look like when you’re withdrawing.
For most E-1 through E-6 service members, Roth TSP provides the better long-term outcome. Start Roth contributions early and let tax-free growth work for decades. Future you will be grateful for the decision present you makes today.
